The Tapi Project, a renowned fusion band from India, seamlessly blends folk traditions with modern sounds. The band members emphasize that their creative process is driven by a desire to remain true to the music, allowing it to evolve naturally.

Based in Surat, this talented group has graced stages in over 30 countries, recently performing at Punjab Kala Bhawan, invited by Thinkers Collective, an initiative by the Institute for Development and Communication (IDC).

The ensemble features Yogendra Saniawala (instruments, lyrics), Swati Minaxi (lead vocals), Gaurav Kapadia (drums), and Biju Nambiar.

Swati describes their music as a reflection of their environment and a mirror for listeners to discover themselves. “Tapi’s lyrics and melodies resonate with our lived experiences,” she explains.

Yogendra believes that traditions serve as a guiding light for personal identity. “We progress from one illumination to another,” he remarks, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the essence of traditions while innovating.

Having performed globally, including in Europe and Asia, the band seeks to connect with the audience's deepest emotions, aiming to evoke a range of feelings and narratives. Gaurav notes, “We provide space for interpretation, allowing the audience to take away their own meanings, which is vital for any art form, including music.”

Biju describes the band as a ‘traveller’ that absorbs experiences, which are fundamental to their musical expression. “Our experiences shape the core of our music,” he states.

Dr. Pramod Kumar, Chairperson of IDC, highlights the significance of bringing a band like The Tapi Project to the region. He notes that their music addresses societal issues, human experiences, and environmental concerns. “They are not a sanitized band; instead, they represent the voices of the subaltern through their innovative style. Their willingness to experiment is truly remarkable,” he adds.
