SIR: Mousam Sarkar, the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer for the Bagnan Assembly seat, might get in trouble with the Election Commission of India for publicly questioning the supposed flaws in the Special Intensive Revision process, according to an official on Monday.

Concerns over the SIR exercise were voiced by Sarkar, the Block Disaster Management Officer of Bagnan Block-II. The comments were taken seriously by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) West Bengal, which wrote on X that he would face disciplinary action.

In response to the news, Sarkar said that he has not yet heard anything formal. “So yet, I have not received a letter. When I get it, I’ll react properly,” he said.

The West Bengal CEO’s office said in a thorough post on X that Sarkar should have brought up any complaints with his senior authorities or properly addressed the District Election Officer in accordance with the proper process. It said that he may have been moved to a different position in such a situation. Rather, it said that Sarkar had disregarded service discipline.

The CEO’s office claims that the situation amounts to contempt for a constitutional authority, indiscipline, and rule violations.He works for the Election Commission now, and the CEO office said that “appropriate action will be taken against him as per law.”

“It was necessary in the public interest,” Sarkar said in defense of his conduct. Other police need to raise their voices as well. The public will be severely harmed otherwise.

In a letter dated January 8, Sarkar resigned from his position as Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) Bagnan, citing logical inconsistencies in the AERO record.

In his letter, he said that, in compliance with Election Commission regulations, voters themselves used Form 8 to fix name spelling errors that were discovered during the SIR process as early as 2002. He said that the present irregularities were brought to light because comparable adjustments were made in situations involving age-related disparities.
