GST Fraud Alert: In today’s digital age, it has come to light that fraudsters are targeting small businesses using fake names of government departments. Recently, businesses have been accused of fake GST (GST) have been sent notices that look exactly like departmental notices, extorting huge sums of money by threatening them. To address this critical issue, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued a simplified verification process to prevent innocent citizens from falling prey to fraud. Instead of blindly trusting any notice, businesses now need to visit the official portal and verify it within seconds.
Cybercriminals create notices that look like the real thing, using the GST department logo and official language. They force businesses to pay immediately by threatening fines and legal action, causing them to panic and take rash action. According to the department, the DIN number on these notices is the only way to identify their authenticity.
What is DIN Number?
Document Identification Number (DIN) is a unique identification code for each authorized contact sent by the GST department. This number is clearly printed on the instruction in a specific format, such as “CBIC-YYYY MM ZCDR NNNN.” If your notice doesn’t have this number or is in the wrong format, it’s completely fake.

If a confirmation message appears on the screen, it means your notification has been validated by the department and is completely genuine. However, if the portal displays a “No record found” or error message, then the document is definitely sent by a fraudster. In such a situation, the trader should immediately contact the concerned department or the nearest police station without panicking. If a fake GST notice is received, instead of ignoring it, traders should immediately call 1030 and report it to Cyber Cell. Prompt reporting will not only save you but also prevent other small traders from falling prey to this huge scam. For digital security, always making payments and communicating through authorized channels is the safest and best option.
