In an ideal world, 9th January 2026 would have been the release day for Jana AwellVijay’s final film before becoming a full-time politician. However, the twist of fate is such that the film’s censor certificate hearing at the Madras High Court happened on this date, after the proceedings had begun on January 7.

Earlier in the day, it seemed like good news finally for Vijay, his fans and the Jana Awell team after the Madras High Court had instructed the CBFC to give the U/A certificate for the film. At that point, it seemed like that movie would be on track to release for January 14, keeping with its Pongal promise.

However, that dream was quashed within hours as the Madras High Court put a stay on its earlier order to give the CBFC more time for defending their stand against the film. With the Pongal holidays set to begin, the date for that hearing is scheduled for January 21, making a Pongal release out of question. However, there is a twist to the tale.

On Monday (January 12), the Jana Awell producers KVN Productions will appeal to the Supreme Court regarding the unresolved censor certificate issue. With the case still ongoing at the Madras High Court, it remains to be seen as to how much effect this incoming appeal at Supreme Court will have against the CBFC.

However, if things go their way, Jana Awell‘s producers can get the Supreme Court to list the case in urgent appeal section, which could fast track the date for legal proceedings. All eyes are on January 12 and a best-case scenario could still be a January 14 release. As of now, though, a release in January looks bleak, barring a miracle.
