A user on X has gone viral on social media after sharing a detailed guide on how to reduce spam calls, drawing widespread attention from users frustrated by relentless telemarketing and scam calls.

In a lengthy post on X, Chidanand Tripathi claimed that many people unknowingly make the problem worse by declining or engaging with spam calls. “You’ve been blocking spam calls wrong this entire time. Every time you decline, you confirm your number is active. The calls multiply," he wrote, explaining that phone numbers are often sold by “data brokers" to call centres along with personal details.

Tripathi outlined an eight-step approach to tackling the issue, starting with registering numbers on the US National Do Not Call Registry. “Step 1: Register with the National Do Not Call Registry," he added.

While he noted that scammers often ignore the registry, he said it helps stop legitimate telemarketers.

He also advised users to enable built-in spam filters on their smartphones, which he said can block up to 80 per cent of unwanted calls. “Step 2: Enable your phone’s built-in spam blocker," he further wrote.

He further recommended installing spam-blocking apps such as RoboKiller, Nomorobo and Truecaller to identify or automatically block suspicious numbers. “Step 3: Download a spam-blocking app," he suggested.

Calling the removal of personal data from broker websites the “nuclear option," Tripathi urged users to opt out of platforms like Spokeo and WhitePages, claiming it can reduce spam calls by up to 70 per cent. “Step 4: Remove your number from data broker sites," he further added.

He stressed the importance of never answering unknown calls, pressing buttons or calling back, warning that “each interaction teaches their AI you’re a live target." “Step 5: Stop confirming your number is active."

Additional tips included using disposable numbers for online sign-ups, blocking international calls if unnecessary, and reporting spam to the Federal Trade Commission. “Step 6: Use a disposable number for signups," he further suggested, adding, “Step 7: Block international calls if you don’t need them."

“Step 8: Report every spam call to FTC…" According to Tripathi, users who follow all eight steps can see spam calls drop sharply within weeks. He said the strategy works because spam systems are “AI-driven" and focus on “responsive" numbers.

The thread resonated widely, with many users sharing the post as a practical guide to reclaiming peace from spam calls.
