Electric motorcycle maker Verge is building the world's first production motorcycle with solid-state battery technology. It offers faster charging, more than double the range and better safety than traditional batteries.

eElectric motorcycle maker Verge Motorcycles is building the world's first production motorcycle with solid-state battery technology. This is a huge event for two-wheeler electric mobility, as it marks a long-awaited change in battery development. This Finnish company has created this new battery system in collaboration with technology firm Donut Lab. The Verge claims that the solid-state battery charges much faster than traditional lithium-ion batteries and offers twice the riding range. Its delivery to customers will start in the next few months.

Solid-state batteries use solid materials instead of liquid or gel electrolytes. Due to their safety, efficiency and durability, they are becoming quite popular in the automotive industry. While many global car companies are still testing this technology in prototypes, Verge says it has taken it a step further by incorporating it into a production-ready motorcycle. The company has also made it clear that this new battery technology will not increase the price of the motorcycle.

The biggest advantage of this new battery is said to be its charging performance. The Verge says the solid-state pack can deliver up to 186 miles (300 kilometers) of range in about 10 minutes. Traditional lithium-ion batteries degrade with repeated charging, but the company claims that this battery is designed to last for the entire life of the motorcycle. Customers will also get the option of an extended-range battery pack, which will increase the range from 217 miles (350 kilometers) to 370 miles (600 kilometers) on a single charge.

Focus on security and stability

Apart from performance, The Verge cites security and stability as the main benefits of this technology. Solid-state batteries are considered more stable and less prone to fire than liquid-based lithium-ion packs. Additionally, they work reliably in varying temperatures. The company says that these batteries have used materials that are easily available around the world, so that the risk of supply interruption is reduced.
