Indian Railway New Rules: By Indian Railways (Indian Railway) has taken a big step for the welfare of the families of its employees. Now, unmarried, widowed or divorced daughters of railway employees can get health benefits and travel passes even after the death of their parents. This decision will provide relief to thousands of families who are financially weak and dependent on pension or other government benefits.
According to reports, under the earlier system, upon the death of a railway employee, his widowed wife was entitled to free medical benefits under the “Widow Pass” and Retired Employees Liberalized Health Scheme (RELHS). However, after the death of the wife, these benefits were not available to the dependent daughters, forcing them to visit hospitals and railway offices.
These benefits will now be available for free
However, the Railway Board has made it clear that daughters in receipt of secondary family pension will be treated as an integral part of the railway family. They will be provided free treatment, medicines and other medical facilities in railway hospitals. The Directorate of Health has confirmed that unmarried, widowed or divorced girls who fulfill the dependency criteria will not be excluded from the scheme. Universal Medical Identity Card (UMID) will also be given preference.

Benefits to families of railway employees
According to reports, Indian Railways has also made major changes in the travel facilities. Earlier, the widow pass would expire on the death of the wife, but now it will be transferred to the eldest eligible daughter of the family. Other dependent members can also travel using this pass if eligible as per rules. This will enable the girls to travel across the country at no additional cost.
Rules applicable in NCR zone
North Central Railway (NCR) Chief Public Relations Officer Shashikant Tripathi said that the facility has been introduced in the NCR zone and will be strictly implemented. North Central Railway Men’s Union General Secretary RD Yadav said this was a long-standing demand of the employees and their families. According to experts, this will not only empower women but also raise the social image of railways.
No more discrimination against girls
This change makes RELHS-97 more liberal and passes the rules in line with the Railway Board’s recent circulars and clarifications. Dependent girls will now be able to enjoy health and travel benefits without any discrimination, which will give them security and self-reliance.
