Singer and former member of the pop group Little Mix, Jesy Nelson, recently shared a major health update about her babies. Taking to her social media page, the singer uploaded a video to talk about her twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, whom she shares with her fiancé, Zion Foster.
Jesy Nelson reveals twins have been diagnosed with a rare conditionIn the social media post shared on her page online, the singer seemed emotional as she talked about “the most grueling three, four months, and endless appointments.” The singer revealed that her twins have been diagnosed with a rare type of condition.
She mentioned that after a lot of checkups, both of her 8-month-old twins have been diagnosed with a severe muscle disease called SMA type 1 . The issue first caught their attention when the singer's mother pointed out that neither of her babies had enough movement in their legs as they should have.
Nelson confessed that at the time she was not worried, as her twins had been born prematurely, and that the doctors had told her that “they won’t reach the same milestones” compared to other babies. Their condition, however, worsened with time. “A few signs started to show later on that they were struggling to feed properly,” she shared and after this the doctors diagnosed them with SMA type 1.
What is SMA type 1?As per the Cleveland Clinic, SMA type 1, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy , is “a genetic condition that causes worsening muscle weakness. There are five subtypes, which range in severity and age of onset. There’s no cure for SMA, but certain therapies and medications can help manage symptoms. About 60% of SMA cases are type 1 — also called Werdnig-Hoffman disease. Symptoms arise within the first six months of life and include limited head control and decreased muscle tone.”
