During winter, many parents opt not to wash their children's hair daily, which can affect its condition. This article offers expert insights on the appropriate frequency and precautions for washing children's hair.


Recommended Hair Washing Frequency for Children
Daily washing is unnecessary. Unlike adults, young children's scalps do not produce oil as quickly, and washing too often can strip their hair of essential natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
General guidelines suggest: For newborns (0–6 weeks): Avoid shampoo for the first 4–6 weeks; use only water for cleaning.


For infants older than 6 weeks: Hair can be washed 1–3 times weekly with a gentle baby shampoo.
For children aged 8–12 years: Washing 2–3 times a week is adequate.


For those over 12 years: Adjust the washing frequency based on the hair's condition and oiliness.


Risks of Daily Hair Washing
Washing hair too frequently can remove natural oils from the scalp, resulting in dry and fragile hair.
This may lead to increased hair breakage and loss.
Additionally, frequent shampooing can irritate sensitive scalps or cause infections.
Consider the child's hair type and the weather conditions.


In summer: If a child is active outdoors and sweats, you may increase the washing frequency slightly.


In winter: Limit washing to prevent colds and dryness of the scalp.


For oily scalps: Children with oilier hair may require more frequent washing.


For dry or curly hair: Less frequent washing helps retain moisture.


Hair Washing Precautions
Always opt for a gentle baby shampoo.
Ensure thorough rinsing to eliminate any shampoo residue.
Avoid using very hot water; lukewarm is preferable.

Apply a small amount of mineral oil to the hair.



Gently remove the flakes using a soft brush.
Then wash with a mild baby shampoo.


Daily washing is not necessary for babies. Washing 2–3 times a week is sufficient, but adjust based on age, weather, and hair condition. Always use a gentle shampoo and the right technique.
