New Delhi: Back and leg pain are very common problems, and they increase as we get older. Lots of people confuse a slipped disc and sciatica, but they are not the same condition. Dr Vinit Banga, Director-Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, in an interaction with News9Live, decoded the difference between a slipped disc and sciatica.
Slipped Disc, also known as a Herniated Disc or Prolopped Disc, is a spinal problem. The spine has a series of bones with elastic pillows of cartilage in between. They are called discs, and they are like shock-absorbing materials. When that cartilage becomes misplaced or damaged, it leads to a Slipped Disc. It may be caused by old age, poor posture, excessive weight, or an injury. When a Slipped Disc pushes the adjacent nerves, it causes pain in the back, neck, arms, or legs. Some of its symptoms are back pain, stiffness, weakness, numbness, or tingling.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica doesn’t refer to an illness, but rather to a series of symptoms. Sciatica occurs as a result of the sciatic nerve being irritated or compressed. This nerve is the longest nerve found in the human body. It extends from the lower back through the hips, down through each leg. Those affected by the medical condition experience discomfort related to sharp, burning pains beginning in the lower back and moving through one leg. Additional symptoms include tingling, as well as numbness or weakness, found within the affected leg or foot.
Differences Between: Slipped Disc & Sciatica
The main point that differs between a slipped disc and sciatica is that a slipped disc is a medical issue, while sciatica is a symptom. A slipped disc may cause sciatica, but it can also happen if sciatica is influenced by other medical conditions, such as spinal stenosis or muscle spasms. Pain from a disc can remain in the back or neck, while sciatica’s pain is felt in the leg.
Treatment and Management
Both conditions often require rest, physiotherapy, pain medicines, and changes in lifestyle. However, in serious situations, injected or surgically treated remedies may become necessary. Early interventions prevent complications.
Lastly
Slipped disc and sciatica are related but not the same thing. A slipped disc causes sciatica, and sciatica is essentially nerve pain. Knowing the differences between them is a great way to ensure the proper remedy.
