The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (January 3) announced the 15-member Indian team for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, in which Indian ODI team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer also returned. However, the board has made it clear that Iyer’s availability will depend on his fitness clearance.

It is noteworthy that Shreyas Iyer got injured while fielding during the Sydney ODI against Australia in October last year, after which he has not played any cricket. According to reports, Iyer will prove his fitness by playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 match against Himachal Pradesh in Jaipur on January 6. If he gets the green signal, he will directly reach Vadodara and join the Indian team.

If doubts over fitness persist, Iyer could play another Vijay Hazare match against Punjab on January 8. At the same time, according to the latest report of Cricbuzz, if Iyer fails to get the medical clearance from BCCI’s Center of Excellence (COE), then the selectors can include Ruturaj Gaikwad in the team, although the possibility of this is said to be less.

Ruturaj Gaikwad recently batted at number 4 in the ODI series against South Africa in the absence of Shreyas Iyer and scored a century of 105 runs in the second match. Despite this, he did not get a place in the team announced against New Zealand. Currently, Gaikwad is captaining Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 and is in great form. He scored 124 against Uttarakhand and 66 against Mumbai in the recent two matches, giving the selectors a strong option.

Indian squad for ODI series against New Zealand: Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wk), Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal.
