Cold weather conditions are set to intensify across several parts of the country as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh cold wave alert. According to the latest forecast, minimum temperatures in north-western regions are likely to fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next two days. After this drop, temperatures are expected to remain largely stable for the following five days.

The weather department has also warned that cold wave conditions may prevail in some areas during the first week of January, with cold winds and low night temperatures adding to winter discomfort.

Rain and Snowfall in Hilly Regions

As per IMD’s outlook, rainfall and snowfall activity is expected between January 5 and 6 in higher altitude regions due to the impact of an active western disturbance. Light to moderate rain or snowfall may occur in mountainous areas, which could further lower temperatures in nearby regions.

In central parts of the country, the minimum temperature is expected to decline by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius gradually over the next four days. Meanwhile, eastern regions are likely to see no major change in night temperatures over the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual fall of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the subsequent three days.

Cold Wave Conditions Likely in the Capital Region

IMD has indicated that cold wave conditions may prevail between January 3 and January 6 in parts of the national capital region. As per official norms, a cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature drops 4.5 to 6.5 degrees Celsius below normal. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions, especially during early morning and night hours.

No Immediate Relief from Cold in Eastern Regions

The weather department has stated that people in eastern regions are unlikely to get relief from the cold anytime soon. Over the next seven days, temperatures may continue to fall, with the mercury possibly dropping by up to 4 degrees Celsius within 24 hours. Persistent cold wave–like conditions may cause difficulties for daily life, particularly during early mornings.

Cold Wave Alert in Plateau Regions

Meteorological authorities have also warned that cold conditions may intensify in plateau regions due to cold winds from northern areas combined with western disturbances. Minimum temperatures may fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, and cold wave conditions could affect several districts over the next two to three days.

Dry Weather but Dense Fog Expected in Western Regions

In western parts of the country, dry weather is likely to continue over the next week. However, dense fog during morning hours may reduce visibility in several areas. IMD has forecast a further 2 to 3 degree Celsius drop in minimum temperatures, making nights and early mornings particularly cold.

Cold Conditions to Persist in Northern Plains

The weather department has also indicated that cold wave conditions may continue until January 7 in parts of the northern plains. People are advised to remain cautious, limit exposure to cold winds, and follow advisories issued by local authorities.

Overall, IMD has urged citizens to stay alert as winter conditions tighten their grip, with cold waves, fog, and occasional rain or snowfall likely to affect daily routines in the coming days.
