In Hindu religion, holy bath is seen not only with physical cleanliness but also with purification of soul and mind. In Sanatan tradition, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Magh Purnima, Ganga Dussehra and Kartik Purnima are considered the main dates of holy bath. Makar Sankranti Bath- 14 January 2026
The festival of Makar Sankranti symbolizes the Uttarayan of Sun God. From this day the movement of the Sun starts towards north, which is considered auspicious and beneficial. Bathing in holy rivers on the day of Makar Sankranti purifies both body and mind. It is believed that bathing on this day removes diseases, suffering and negative thoughts. On this day, sesame seeds, jaggery and charity are also given special importance.
Mauni Amavasya- 18 January 2026
Amavasya of Magh month is called Mauni Amavasya. On this day, special emphasis is given on maintaining silence and introspection. According to religious beliefs, on the day of Mauni Amavasya, the water of Ganga becomes like nectar. Therefore, taking bath in Ganga and other holy rivers eliminates many ills of life. Taking bath, donating and keeping a silent fast on this day is considered to be a special virtue.
Magh Purnima Snan- 1 February 2026
Taking a bath on Magh Purnima is considered extremely fruitful. Taking bath in holy rivers on this day removes impurities from the mind and gives spiritual peace. It is said in the scriptures that by donating sesame, food, clothes, ghee and blanket on Magh Purnima, the virtue increases manifold. This day holds special significance for saints and devotees.
Ganga Dussehra- 25 May 2026
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. It is believed that on this day Mother Ganga descended from heaven to earth. Taking bath in Ganga on this occasion frees one from ten types of sins. Donating, chanting and worshiping on Ganga Dussehra brings happiness and peace in life. In the year 2026, this festival will fall on 25 May.
Kartik Purnima Snan- 24 November 2026
The day of Kartik Purnima is also considered very special for holy bath. Taking bath in rivers, ponds and lakes on this day purifies the soul and old sins are destroyed. Kartik Purnima is also called Dev Diwali. On this day, special results are obtained by donating lamps, charity and worship. In the year 2026, Kartik Purnima will be celebrated on 24 November.
