While many of us wouldn't hesitate to invest in an expensive anti-ageing cream to enhance our complexion, would you consider spending the same amount on your scalp? It appears that many of us would, as the scalpcare trend has seen a surge in popularity, with oils and home microneedling becoming go-to methods for achieving luscious locks.
The hashtag #scalpcare on TikTok has amassed over 1 billion views and continues to grow, indicating a widespread interest in scalp, root and hair care. A prominent product featured in these videos is a home dermarolling (also known as microneedling) device, which users claim can stimulate hair growth.
Previously, microneedling treatments required a visit to a professional clinic, but now, home tools are appearing on online marketplaces at an increasing rate – and they're surprisingly affordable. These devices, equipped with roller heads containing dozens of tiny needles that puncture the surface layers of the scalp, aim to cause controlled damage to the area, triggering stem cell growth.
Given that stem cells contribute to new hair growth, the theory suggests that regular microneedling/dermarolling could result in thicker hair over time. Sounds convincing, doesn't it? To ensure this trend is more substance than hype, we've consulted a hair expert to get his perspective on this TikTok-trending technique.
"The process of dermarolling was first developed as a treatment for acne scars, stretch marks and wrinkles. Since then, the benefits of using it as a treatment for both male and female pattern baldness have been discovered, and it can even be used as a treatment for alopecia areata," explains Kevin Moore, Trichologist at Regrowz.
"By using the roller on your scalp, you stimulate the production of collagen in your skin – hence why it's so effective at treating acne scarring. Research also shows that scalp rolling can encourage the production of stem cells in the hair follicles, which can then lead to hair growth. On top of all that, scalp rolling can also promote the efficacy and absorption of all our hair treatment products and solutions."
