Ruben Amorim admits there are "no conversations" about potential arrivals at Manchester United in the January transfer window - and warned that the team need to look down as well as up over the coming weeks.

The club spent in excess of £200million of new arrivals in the summer, bolstering their frontline by bringing in the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo. But there is unlikely to be any further new faces heading to Old Trafford during the New Year.

There remain obvious holes in the squad. A new central midfielder was on their radar in the summer but they lacked the finances to pursue the likes of Carlos Baleba or Elliot Anderson. Wing-backs remain a vital part of Amorim's philosophy and he is yet to address that position.

But the Portuguese head coach said on Boxing Day that sometimes he has "another idea" to director of football Jason Wilcox and the board when it comes to recruitment, but maintained that "common ground" must be found before a signing is made.

Amorim doesn't appear hopeful of new players arriving during January and whilst there is optimism at United, who sit sixth, making a charge towards the top four, he is also wise to the teams below them.

Amorim said: "The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversations at this moment to have any change in the squad. There's a process, there's an idea that is going to continue. We are near the places of the Champions League, but we are also near like eight teams behind us. So let's focus on the next game, just that. Our focus is to win the next game."

United are three points off Liverpool, who occupy fourth spot. But equally Fulham in 11th are only three points shy of the Red Devils with the Premier League table allowing little room for error.

Amorim has ruled out the possibility of Kobbie Mainoo leaving Manchester, which had been speculated. The midfielder had only start once this season with his standing not what it was under Erik ten Hag, when he was a regular in the middle of the pitch. Now he's often warming the bench.

There was rumoured interest from Napoli but Amorim insists Mainoo is the future of the club. He said recently: "Kobbie Mainoo will have the opportunity he has all the time.

"He played in different positions: he can do that [defensive midfield] position, he can play if we play with three, he can play like we play in the last game - the position of Mason Mount in this game (a number 10 who drops into midfield). So, he's going to be the future of Manchester United, that is my feeling. He just needs to wait for his chance and everything can change in football in two days."
