Mumbai: On New Year’s Eve and in the early hours of January 1, 211 persons were arrested by Mumbai Traffic Police for drunk driving. Compared to previous year, when 333 drunk drivers were arrested, there are fewer traffic infractions. Police issued around 13,752 challans for violating different traffic laws across the city during the anti-traffic infraction campaign.
Police had established checkpoints at about 100 spots across the city on New Year’s Eve, and traffic officers used breathalyzers to check night riders. In order to make sure that the legal limit of 30 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood was not exceeded, they also pulled over a number of drivers.
According to a report in The Hindustan Times, Mumbai Traffic Police collected fines of Rs 1.31 crore through challans for infractions like riding without a helmet, jumping signals, driving on the wrong side, using a cell phone while driving, riding in a triple seat, and operating a vehicle without a license.
On New Year’s Eve, more than 17,000 police officers—including 10 more commissioners, 38 deputy commissioners, 69 assistant commissioners, 2,790 inspectors, and more than 14,200 constables—were stationed across the city to avoid unfortunate events and uphold law and order.
