Baghpat: UKhap Panchayat in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh has once again imposed strict rules for boys and youth. The new instruction of the Panchayat is that the use of smartphones by children should be controlled and boys and girls should not wear half pants or shorts in public places. 'Thamba Patti Mehar Desh Khap' Panchayat has taken this unique decision. They claim that this step is to stop the increasing western influence among children and youth and to save cultural values. The Panchayat has appealed to the parents not to allow minor children to use smartphones. The Panchayat argues that smartphones take children on the wrong path.
The Panchayat has suggested that boys should wear kurta-pajama and girls should wear salwar-kurta instead of half pants. He says that decent dressing is necessary to maintain discipline in the village. While on one hand some people are calling it an attack on personal freedom, on the other hand some people argue that such rules are necessary for the development of children.

A video explaining the reason for this decision of Khap Panchayat of Baghpat is going viral on social media. A Khap representative, explaining the logic behind the ban on dress, says, "Our boys wear half pants. They wear it both inside the house and outside. Because of wearing it inside the house, they dare to wear it outside also. Go out only wearing pants, kurta-pajama or other clothes as per our society. Boys and girls roaming in the streets wearing half pants is an ugly display for the society. Therefore, we all will follow this decision taken by the society."
The Panchayat has also suggested that instead of marriage halls, marriages should be conducted simply in the courtyard of one's village or house. This will reportedly strengthen family relationships and avoid unnecessary expenses. He also said that instead of printing expensive cards for the wedding, it is better to send invitations on WhatsApp. Some leaders including Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MP Rajkumar Sangwan have supported this decision. He believes that such steps are necessary to save cultural values.
A warning has been given that social action will be taken against those who break this instruction of the Panchayat. Panchayat officials have instructed families to pay special attention to the dressing of children. Khap Panchayats in many villages of North India have previously imposed similar rules related to dress. Earlier, there was a lot of controversy over the ban imposed on girls using phones and wearing jeans.
