Mexico Train Derailment: An Interoceanic train derailed in Oaxaca on Sunday, killing at least 13 people. According to the Mexican Navy, the event happened close to the town of Nizanda and included 250 persons, including 241 passengers and 9 crew members. Of the 98 people hurt in this event, 193 were said to be out of danger, including 36 who are being treated at a hospital.

The president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, said on X, “The Secretariat of the Navy has informed me that in the Interoceanic Train accident, unfortunately, 13 people died; 98 are injured, five of them seriously.” The wounded are being treated in IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec, as well as IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz.


In addition to the IMSS and IMSS-Wellbeing representatives, I have instructed the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior to visit the location and personally visit with the families. The activities will be coordinated by the Secretary of the Interior. I am grateful to the Governor of Oaxaca and his staff for their help. We’ll keep giving you updates,” she continued.


Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has opened an inquiry into the event, Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos said on social media.
