UPI Transactions 2025: The rapid adoption of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India has taken digital payments to new heights, but the adoption has been uneven across the country. According to a report, when adjusting the November data by population among larger states, Maharashtra was almost seven times ahead of Bihar in per capita UPI transactions. Similarly, Telangana is six times ahead of Tripura. This disparity underscores the country’s persistent digital divide. That is, in some places the use of new technologies is limited and in some places it is widely used.
According to the data, the state of Telangana in India is leading in UPI usage. The report states that UPI now handles over 20 billion transactions per month and accounts for approximately 85% of digital payments, but the pace of adoption depends on income, urbanization and merchant acceptance. In terms of population, small and urban areas are ahead. Delhi tops the list with 23.9 monthly transactions per capita, followed by the state of Goa with 23.3 monthly transactions per capita, while Telangana has 22.6 monthly transactions per capita. And Chandigarh is doing 22.5 monthly transactions per capita. Among larger states, Maharashtra leads with 17.4 transactions per capita.
According to the report, states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are well above the national average in UPI usage, while states like Jharkhand, Assam and Bengal are below the average. Telangana leads in terms of value, with monthly UPI transactions per capita at around Rs 34,800, followed by Goa with monthly UPI transactions per capita at Rs 33,500 and Delhi with monthly UPI transactions at Rs 31,300 per capita. On the other hand, Tripura and Bihar have less than four transactions per capita per month. Both these states are significantly behind in terms of value as well. The average in Tripura is Rs 5,100, while in Bihar it is around Rs 5,400.
