Karnataka: A tragic and deeply disturbing sequence of events has unfolded in a suicide case involving a newly married woman from Karnataka, which later extended across state borders. What initially appeared to be a single incident has now developed into a complex case involving multiple deaths, alleged harassment, family disputes, and ongoing police investigations in two states. The incident has raised serious questions about marital pressure, emotional distress, and the social consequences of public accusations.
The case revolves around a 26-year-old woman named Ganavi, also known as Rashi, who was married just weeks before her death. She allegedly attempted suicide at her residence in Bengaluru and was later admitted to a hospital, where she eventually died. Before her death, she reportedly accused her husband and in-laws of mental harassment, emotional rejection, and ill-treatment following marital disputes.
The incident quickly gained public attention, especially after Ganavi’s family members staged protests outside her husband’s residence. They demanded strict legal action against her husband and his family, alleging dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
Following Ganavi’s death, the situation took an unexpected and more serious turn. According to police officials, her husband Suraj, along with his mother Jayanti and brother Sanjay, left Bengaluru and travelled to Nagpur in Maharashtra. This move came amid intense public backlash and emotional pressure faced by the family after the allegations surfaced.
While staying at a relative’s house in Nagpur, Suraj allegedly died by suicide. His mother Jayanti is also reported to have attempted suicide at the same location and is currently undergoing medical treatment in a critical condition. Police officials confirmed that no suicide note or digital message was found on Suraj’s phone.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Suraj’s body at a government hospital, and an Unnatural Death Report was registered at the local police station. Authorities are now examining whether psychological pressure, public humiliation, or guilt contributed to his decision.
Ganavi’s mother, Rukmini, publicly reacted to Suraj’s death, stating that guilt may have driven him to take his own life. She claimed that her daughter was emotionally devoted to her husband and that the realization of his actions may have overwhelmed him after her death.
She also strongly denied allegations regarding her daughter’s character, stating that Ganavi was shy, well-mannered, and had maintained a respectable lifestyle before marriage. According to her, any claims made against Ganavi should have been raised earlier if they were true.
Ganavi and Suraj were married on October 29 and hosted a grand wedding reception in Bengaluru attended by friends and relatives. Shortly after the wedding, the couple travelled to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon. During the trip, disagreements reportedly began after Suraj allegedly learned about Ganavi’s pre-marital relationship.
The conflict escalated to such an extent that the couple returned to Bengaluru earlier than planned. After their return, Ganavi allegedly faced rejection and humiliation from her husband and in-laws, which further strained the relationship.
Due to ongoing marital discord, Ganavi’s family brought her back to their home. However, emotional distress reportedly continued. On Tuesday afternoon, she attempted suicide and was rushed to a private hospital. Doctors later declared her brain-dead, and she remained on ventilator support until she passed away on Thursday night.
Her family later filed a formal complaint accusing her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment, emotional abuse, and abetment to suicide. The case was registered and remains under active investigation.
Rukmini further alleged that despite being married for over a month, her daughter was denied basic emotional support and even proper food at her marital home. She claimed that Ganavi had pleaded with her mother-in-law to allow her to stay if she was treated with affection and dignity.
According to the family, Ganavi was unwilling to seek a divorce due to fear of social stigma and loss of family honour, which may have added to her emotional burden.
Police authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing in both Karnataka and Maharashtra. Statements from family members, medical reports, digital records, and travel details are being examined to establish the sequence of events and determine accountability.
This case highlights the severe emotional and psychological toll of marital conflict, societal pressure, and public scrutiny. As investigations continue, authorities aim to uncover the truth behind this tragic chain of events and ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law.
