Truecaller has launched a new and free voicemail feature for Android users in India. The Swedish caller identification platform company says this feature is different from traditional voicemail systems and offers a completely device-native experience. Importantly, voicemails will be saved directly to the phone's local storage, meaning there's no need to rely on a separate server or a paid service. Along with this feature, Truecaller is also offering instant transcription, automatic spam protection, and AI-based smart call categorization.
According to the developer, Truecaller Voicemail is easy to set up and allows users to record, store, and play messages when they miss a call. The voicemail is transcribed into text within seconds, allowing users to read the message instead of listening to it if they prefer. This feature will be particularly useful in situations where listening to a call is not possible.
This new Truecaller voicemail feature has been designed with India in mind. It supports 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Nepali, Punjabi, Sanskrit, and Urdu. The company says this will allow a greater number of users to experience voicemail in their preferred language.
With the help of AI, this feature goes beyond just transcription. It also offers options such as smart call categorization, adjustable playback speed, and spam filtering. Truecaller claims that voicemails associated with spam calls will be identified separately, giving users better control.
Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said, "Traditional voicemail systems were built for the needs of a different era. With Truecaller Voicemail, we are rethinking how voice messages fit into today's communication landscape. It's free, device-native, and fully integrated into the calling experience. Through on-device storage, instant transcription, spam protection, and support for Indian languages, we are trying to overcome the limitations of older systems."
