Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting in Florida, has died by suicide, his family has confirmed. Donovan, 26, passed away on December 15 after what his loved ones described as a seven-year battle with schizophrenia. He was a resident of Coral Springs, Florida, and worked professionally in the information technology field.

Donovan was a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, when a mass shooting took place on campus, killing 17 people. While he survived the attack, the trauma of that day stayed with him long after. Family members have said that the psychological impact of the shooting became intertwined with his later mental health struggles.

In a Facebook post, Donovan’s sister, Nancy Metayer Bowen, shared that Donovan, a resident of Coral Springs, Florida, died by suicide on December 15 after battling schizophrenia for seven years.

Professionally, Donovan had built a career in IT and was known among friends and family as intelligent, kind, and deeply thoughtful. His loved ones emphasized that his life was far more than his illness or the tragedy he survived, even as both shaped much of his adult journey.

Following his death, a fundraiser was launched on GoFundMe to help support the family and cover expenses. As of Sunday, December 21, the campaign had raised approximately $20,000 toward its $70,000 goal, reflecting widespread support and sympathy for the Metayer family.
