Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme: Marrying outside one's caste is still fraught with many challenges. To provide social and economic support to such relationships, the Uttar Pradesh government is running a special scheme. Under this scheme, couples who have an inter-caste marriage are given government assistance of ₹2.50 lakh.
Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme: Even today, in many parts of society, marrying outside one's caste is not easy. To provide social acceptance and economic stability to such relationships, the Uttar Pradesh government is providing special government assistance. Under this initiative, couples who have an inter-caste marriage receive financial assistance worth lakhs of rupees.
Under which scheme is the assistance provided?
In Uttar Pradesh, this assistance is implemented under the name of Dr. Ambedkar Social Harmony Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme. The objective of the scheme is clear: to break down caste barriers and strengthen the idea of equality in society. Through this scheme, the government provides a total of ₹2.50 lakh to eligible couples.
Who can benefit from the scheme?
Only couples in which either the husband or the wife belongs to a Scheduled Caste can avail of this scheme. The marriage must be legally registered, and this registration should be under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The application deadline is one year after the marriage.
How and when is the money disbursed?
The government does not disburse the entire amount at once. In the first phase, ₹1.50 lakh is directly transferred to the couple's joint bank account. The remaining ₹1 lakh is kept as a three-year fixed deposit (FD) so that it can be used in the future.
Application process
Interested couples have to apply online by visiting the official website of the Social Welfare Department of the Uttar Pradesh government. Information related to marriage, caste, and bank details must be filled in carefully in the application form.
What are the necessary documents?
During the application process, it is mandatory to upload documents related to the marriage certificate, caste certificate, proof of first marriage, affidavit, income certificate, and joint bank account. An acknowledgement receipt is also issued after a successful application. Why is this scheme special?
This scheme is not limited to just financial assistance. The government views it as a means of social change, aiming to promote acceptance of inter-caste marriages and weaken the roots of discrimination.
