Why Google wants US visa-holding employees to avoid overseas travel
20 Dec 2025
Google has advised its employees in the United States on visas to avoid international travel due to long delays in visa re-entry processing at US embassies and consulates.
The advisory was sent through Google's external immigration counsel BAL Immigration Law, according to Business Insider.
The memo warned that employees requiring visa stamping could face months-long delays in returning to the US after overseas travel.
Visa stamping delays could extend stay outside the US
Travel advisory
The email advised employees to postpone non-essential international trips due to "unusually long" visa stamping delays at US diplomatic missions worldwide.
It said some US embassies and consulates are facing appointment delays of up to 12 months.
The memo warned that international travel might risk an extended stay outside the US for affected employees.
Enhanced vetting process adds to travel uncertainty
Visa delays
The delays are being reported in several countries as US missions deal with routine visa backlogs and enhanced social media screening requirements.
These checks apply to many visa categories, including H-1B workers and their dependents (H-4), as well as students and exchange visitors on F, J, and M visas.
The disruption affects multiple visa categories but does not specify next steps for employees already outside the US with postponed appointments.
US Department of State acknowledges delays
Official response
The US Department of State has acknowledged the delays, stating it is conducting "online presence reviews for applicants."
A department spokesperson said visa appointments may be rescheduled as staffing and resources change. Applicants can request an expedited processing on a case-by-case basis.
Immigration law firm Reddy Neumann Brown PC also reported postponed visa appointments in countries such as Ireland and Vietnam.
