Train Luggage Rule: Thousands and lakhs of countrymen travel by Indian Railways every day. We often pack heavy bags for long journeys, but do you know that like an airplane, there is a set limit for carrying luggage in a train as well? Keeping in mind the convenience and safety of passengers, Railways has shown strictness regarding the rules to luggage.
The baggage allowance in Indian Railways depends on which class you are travelling. In AC First Class, the limit of free baggage is 70 kg and maximum limit is 150 kg. 50 kg free with a maximum of 100 kg in AC 2-tier, 40 kg free with a maximum of 40 kg in AC 3-tier or chair car, 40 kg free with a maximum of 80 kg in sleeper class and 35 kg free with a maximum of 70 kg in second class (general).
If you are caught carrying luggage in excess of the prescribed limit, the Railways can charge you a heavy fine. If you exceed the limit, you may be charged 1.5 times more. If your luggage is very heavy or big, it is mandatory to book in a luggage van. For this you will have to go to the parcel office of the station and make the booking. The size of the suitcase should not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm.
Due to security reasons, Railways has completely banned carrying some things in the train. If you carry any of these, you may face legal action. It is strictly prohibited to carry crackers, gunpowder, kerosene, petrol, gas cylinder, acid along with dead animals or raw meat in the train.
