The sire of jumps star Constitution Hill has died at the age of 20 at stud in Ireland. Blue Bresil had become one of the sport’s leading stallions, producing 132 individual winners over jumps since 2013. His best son to date has been Constitution Hill who, trained by Nicky Henderson, won the Champion Hurdle at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, one of eight Grade 1 victories.

Other names to go on to significant success have been Royale Pagaille, twice winner of the Betfair Chase, Blue Lord, Mick Jazz, Inthepocket, Good Land and Redemption Day. The in-demand stallion had recently covered top racemares Honeysuckle, the two-time Champion Hurdle winner, 11-time Grade 1-winner Apples Jade, and the Champion Chase winner Put The Kettle On.

He had been based at Glenview Stud in County Cork since 2020. The stud broke the news of his passing on its social media account on Wednesday.

“Glenview Stud are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Blue Bresil at the age of 20,” a statement said.

"Since joining the Glenview Stud roster in 2020, Blue Bresil’s remarkable rise through the stallion ranks saw him attract consistently high-quality books of mares. His first Irish crop of four-year-olds has begun to make a significant impact this season, with exceptional performances from Coutach, Samba Train, Blue Waters, Laguna Beach, Minella Marathon and juvenile hurdle winner Aqua Blue, among others.

"We would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported him throughout his career, with special thanks to the Glenview Stud staff for their exceptional care and dedication. We also extend our gratitude to Yorton Farm for managing his career in the UK with such professionalism.

"Blue Bresil will be greatly missed by everyone at Glenview and Rathbarry Studs, but his legacy will live on through his progeny. He leaves his stamp as one of the leading National Hunt stallions of his time."
