Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana has been spared a lengthy ban despite being twice caught driving without a licence. The Ivorian striker, who is currently on loan with Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük, was initially stopped in February when police caught him driving alone and without insurance.

Fofana, 22, was handed eight penalty points on his provisional licence after a hearing in October. But the forward was then caught behind the wheel of his £100k Cadillac once again in July and was also accused of speeding.

Fofana was handed an additional six penalty points by a magistrate sitting in Bexley, bringing the total to 14. He was sentenced at a hearing conducted behind closed doors in a Single Justice Procedure, with the court choosing not to go on to consider whether he should be given a ban - a decision that has yet to be explained.

Fofana was fined £10,000 by magistrates for the first charges when he was stopped in Chessington, Surrey. “I checked the driver's details where I found that they were a provisional licence holder having applied for the licence on April 9, 2024," said PC Mark Nash.

“The driver admitted to being in the UK for three years. The vehicle was not displaying 'L' on the front or rear of the vehicle. The driver was the only occupant inside the vehicle and was not being supervised.”

After being prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police for the second time, Fofana did not enter a plea. He was found guilty by a magistrate and issued with a £440 fine for the speeding offence. The forward was also ordered to pay £110 in costs, as a well as a £176 victim surcharge.

Fofana joined Chelsea from Norwegian side Molde in 2022 and went on to make four appearances across his debut season. But he was then sent out on a series of loans to Union Berlin, Burnley and Goztepe.

He found himself considerably down the pecking order this summer under Enzo Maresca and completed another loan move to Fatih Karagümrük, where he has scored five goals in 11 appearances.

The Turkish side have an option to buy Fofana at the end of his loan deal. He has two-and-a-half years left to run on his contract with Chelsea.

Fofana has also made three appearances for the Ivory Coast national team during his career - his debut coming in 2019. But he has yet to score a goal for his country.
