From Big Ben to the Mailbox, England boasts an array of iconic buildings. Yet, according to findings from angi, York Minster has been crowned the most stunning building in England. For centuries, dating back to the 7th century,York Minster has served as a cornerstone of Christianity across the northern regions of the nation.
With its magnificent stained glass windows and elaborate architectural design, thecathedral draws visitors from every corner of the world. The cathedral's Rose Window has achieved global recognition, having been crafted in 1515 by Master Glazier Robert Petty. Its panels showcase red Lancaster roses interspersed with Tudor red and white roses, commemorating the union between Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York.
A Tripadvisor reviewer commented: "Must see cathedral in York, not religious visitors but this building is simply outstanding."
Someone else remarked: "Although we aren't religious, this is a must-visit. The splendour and grace cannot fail to be appreciated. The majesty of the building alone is worth the entrance fee but there is so much more than that."
Another guest enthused: "Spectacular! Truly stunning, never appreciated the history of York before, incredible place to visit!"
In 1984, the renowned Minster was hit by a lightning bolt, leaving townsfolk stunned as they witnessed the roof being consumed by flames.
Bob Littlewood, superintendent of the Works, recounted: "We suddenly heard this roar as the roof started to come down and we just had to run as the whole thing collapsed like a pack of chairs."
The intense heat caused the glass in the cathedral's globally celebrated Rose Window to crack, but miraculously, the window remained intact.
Following the blaze, Blue Peter organised a competition for children to design new bosses for the cathedral roof. The victorious designs depicted Neil Armstong's inaugural moonwalk and the 1982 recovery of Henry VIII's warship, the Mary Rose.
Visitors who arrive before January 5 will have the opportunity to experience York Minster's Christmas Tree Festival, featuring 40 trees exhibited throughout the cathedral. These magnificent trees are adorned according to unique themes by local businesses, schools and charities.
Youngsters can partake in the Christmas Tree Trail to identify several intriguing features around the Cathedral.
