New Delhi: Ferrari sees India as a small market for now, but one with clear long-term potential. Speaking at IIT Bombay’s E-Summit 2025, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said the company is watching the country closely as wealth levels rise and infrastructure continues to improve. “India, for the time being, is small. But I think there is good potential,” he said.

India’s passenger vehicle market is heading towards annual sales of around 50 lakh units. However, the super sports car segment remains limited, mainly due to high taxes and low overall volumes, says Autocar India . Ferrari currently has three sales points in the country, located in Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi. According to Vigna, staying connected to the market early is important. “I think that it’s important to be close to the market when it is small so that it can become bigger.”

Profile of Ferrari customers in India

Ferrari’s top management says the profile of Indian buyers is slowly changing, shaped by returning professionals and better roads. CEO Benedetto Vigna says “I see more and more people who were in the US and are coming back to India because the situation keeps changing.”

Ferrari’s recent conversations with Indian customers point to the same trend. Now they feel more confident using high-performance cars because infrastructure has improved compared to the past. “Recently, we had the pleasure of dining with clients from different business fields. They were all underlining the possibility now that they can use the new infrastructure that was not there in the past,” he said. This has also affected the kind of cars Indian buyers prefer.

India is also different when it comes to the age of buyers. Globally, the average Ferrari owner is around 51 years old. In India, however, that number is much lower. “There are countries such as India where the average age is 40,” Vigna said, adding that people who are planning to buy are even younger, at around 38. He also noted that nearly 40 per cent of Ferrari’s new customers worldwide are now under 40.

How Ferrari owners use their cars in India

When it comes to how Ferraris are driven, Vigna said customers usually fall into two groups. With more racetracks planned in India, many owners enjoy pushing their cars on the track. “We have clients and I have to say a lot of Indians belong to this category. They are racers. They like to have fun. They like to go high-speed on the track.”

There is another group that prefers a calmer experience. “But then, we also have clients who use the car most of the time in automatic mode and are scared to go high-speed.” Still, Vigna believes Indian buyers mostly belong to the first group. “I have to say, based on the number of clients I know in India, that Indians are more about clients who like to race and enjoy the car.”
