During the winter season, people often try to keep the house warm by closing windows and doors. However, experts say that maintaining ventilation (air movement) in the room is very important even in cold. Constantly staying in a closed room can have serious negative effects on health.
The first problem is stuffy and polluted air. Due to continuous closure of the house, CO₂, dust, microbes and allergy causing particles accumulate in the room. This can cause problems like difficulty in breathing, fatigue, headache and allergies. It can be even more risky for small children and the elderly.
The second problem is the risk of infection. Dust and bacteria can last for a long time indoors. Due to lack of ventilation, they keep spreading in the air and the risk of viral or bacterial infection increases in winter. This risk increases especially during the flu and cold season.
The third major problem is moisture and mold build-up. When the house is closed in winter, moisture accumulates in the room. This can lead to mold growth on walls and floors, which causes respiratory diseases and allergies. Mold can also cause skin and eye problems.
Experts say that there should be air circulation by opening windows and doors for at least 15-20 minutes a day. This keeps the room air fresh and reduces health risks. Also, by keeping the window open with light heat and heater, air keeps coming in and out, due to which the indoor air does not get polluted much.
Also, keeping plants in the house also helps in improving the air quality. Some indoor plants like spider plant and aloe vera are helpful in increasing oxygen in the air and reducing harmful particles.
