Mikel Arteta was forced to take off Ben White during the first half of Arsenal's clash against Wolves on Saturday night. The 28-year-old right-back appeared to suffer a muscle problem after racing back to defend a counter-attack.
Shortly before the half-hour mark, the Gunners were caught outnumbered at the back, gifting Hwang Hee-chan a free-run at David Raya. White chased down the Wolves striker and, in doing so, he sustained a hamstring injury.
The Arsenal defender, who's only recently returned from a spell on the sidelines, was spotted clutching the back of his thigh after slamming on the brakes. White went down and Robert Jones invited medical staff onto the pitch.
After receiving some treatment, he climbed to his feet and was replaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly. As it stands, the severity of the problem remains unknown and Arteta will be expected to provide an update in his post-match press conference.
Earlier this month, White marked his long-awaited return to action with an impressive performance in a 2-0 win over Brentford. It was just his second start of the Premier League season, having not featured since the opening weekend back in August.
White was named man of the match and Arteta quick to praise him for his 'attitude'. Speaking to reporters after the game, the Arsenal boss said: "Personally, I’m very, very happy for him as a human being.
"I think the rest of the team is the same because he’s a player who has always played for us, and sadly, because of the right reasons, he wasn’t playing that much because Jurrien [Timber] was excellent, and he was out for a while, and then he needed to earn his place.
"But his attitude has been so positive, so good. Then when you are ready and you’re given the opportunity, you take it like he did today. So I’m very happy that we have him back in the best version of himself as well, and we’re going to need him because he’s a tremendous player."
Arteta added: "The first thing as a defender is he defends, and defends with that purpose and with that determination and efficiency. He’s done that today.
"Then if he can add the value that he can add with the ball through his passing, through his movement and through the deliveries that he can put in with the quality that he has, so be it, and today I think he’s done both very well."
Arsenal failed to breach the Wolves backline in the first half. Speaking to reporters at the Sobha Realty Training Centre on Friday, Arteta forecasted a difficult evening at the Emirates Stadium.
"I know the manager really well and how he’s going to push and get the players ready to [try to cause a shock]," said the Spaniard. "From our side, we’re going to go full gas from the beginning and we know what we have to do."
On if Arsenal need to beat Wolves in order to win the Premier League, Arteta added: "At the end you're going to have to have over 90 points probably to win it.
"So that means winning a lot of football matches and tomorrow we have three that we have to win."
