Looking for a Christmas watch that you've not already seen but will still hit you right in the feels? Love period dramas? Look no further. This 2017 comedy is a biographical movie based on Charles Dickens. Directed by Bharat Nalluri and written by Susan Coyne, The Man Who Invented Christmas is based on Les Standiford's 2008 book of the same name. It stars Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, and Jonathan Pryce, and follows Dickens (Stevens) as he conceives and writes A Christmas Carol.
The film's synopsis reads: "In 1843 London, author Charles Dickens finds himself in financial trouble after writing three unsuccessful novels in a row. Desperate for a hit, Dickens relies on real-life inspiration and his vivid imagination to bring Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters to life in A Christmas Carol, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration known today."
The Man Who Invented Christmas has a solid 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus stating: "The Man Who Invented Christmas adds holiday magic to the writing of A Christmas Carol, putting a sweetly revisionist spin on the story behind a classic yuletide tale."
But the film has been given the prize as the best "Christmas Period Drama" by IMDb, where it made the number one spot.
One fan wrote: "Very enjoyable and captivating. Did not see a single flaw with this film."
"I love this film. As something of a Dickens scholar, I like the way it fairly accurately characterised Dickens' financial situation, his relationship with his awful father, his terrible time at the blacking factory, how his characters were as real -- or even more so -- than the people in his life, and the horrors of the publishing business (still accurate today). It even captured Dickens' habit of walking fast up to 20 miles a day, his pet raven, and so much else, " another said.
A third added: "Acting masterclasses all around and super narrative. Made me start reading Dickens again."
Another reviewer expressed: "I'm so glad this was brought back to the big screen for Christmas '22! I missed its original run in 2017 and had forgotten all about it. A compelling film based on a true story, and it was such a heartwarming tale."
The Man Who Invented Christmas is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
