OpenAI is gearing up to introduce an "adult mode" for its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The feature is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2026.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, announced the timeline during a briefing about GPT-5.2.

She said that the company wants to improve its age prediction capabilities before launching this new feature.

Age prediction model: A crucial step for 'adult mode'

OpenAI is currently testing its age prediction model, which automatically determines when to deploy certain safeguards and content restrictions for users under 18.

Simo said during the briefing that the company is already testing this model in select countries.

The goal is to ensure it can accurately identify teens without misidentifying adults, a key requirement before launching the adult features.

The development of the adult mode comes after OpenAI faced criticism for toning down the chatbot's personality in light of user mental health concerns.

This was after a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the company by the parents of a 16-year-old who sought advice on suicide from ChatGPT.

In response, OpenAI introduced additional parental controls and an age-gating system that filters users into appropriate experiences based on their estimated age.

A blend of freedom and customization

The upcoming adult mode will give users more freedom in their interactions with ChatGPT.

It will also allow the chatbot to develop a more customized personality over the course of conversations.

However, this development has raised concerns about the potential emotional attachment users could develop with these AI personalities.

This is because studies show that adults who form emotional bonds with chatbots are more likely to experience psychological distress.
