Japan Earthquake: According to NHK, a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 has occurred off the coast of Japan. Authorities are evaluating possible damage and tsunami hazards after tremors were detected in neighboring areas.
Days after a larger, 7.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the same area, the earthquake occurred around 11:44 a.m. (0244 GMT). A tsunami warning of up to one meter was issued by the JMA.
After a late-night 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Pacific coastal areas resulted in casualties, minor damage, and a tsunami, Japan was evaluating the damage Tuesday and warning of possible aftershocks.
This week’s earthquake left 34 people wounded.
According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, at least 34 individuals were hurt, one of them critically. Public broadcaster NHK stated that the majority of them were struck by falling debris. Reporters were informed by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that an emergency task team had been established to quickly examine the damage. “We are prioritizing people’s lives and making every effort,” she said.
During a Tuesday parliamentary session, Takaichi reminded the public that they must defend their own lives and promised that the government would keep up its best efforts.
About 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan’s main Honshu island, the 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean at 11:15 p.m. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake happened 44 kilometers (27 miles) below the surface and had a magnitude of 7.6.
A deadly tsunami
Kuji port in Iwate prefecture, just south of Aomori, recorded a tsunami up to 70 centimeters (2 feet, 4 inches), while other villages in the area were hit by waves as large as 50 centimeters, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. According to NHK, several oyster rafts were destroyed by the waves.
JMA issued a warning about potential aftershocks in the days ahead. It said that the northeastern coast of Japan, from Chiba, which is located immediately east of Tokyo, to Hokkaido, is somewhat more vulnerable to an earthquake of magnitude 8 and a potential tsunami. The organization reminded locals in 182 municipalities that the warning is not a sign of a major disaster and asked them to keep an eye on their emergency readiness in the next week.
