With the IPL 2026 mini-auction just around the corner, one name that’s on every franchise’s radar is Ashok Sharma, the young fast bowler from Rajasthan who has been making waves in the domestic circuit this season. Recently, he became the highest wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26, solidifying his status as one of the most exciting Indian pacers in the auction pool.

This season has been nothing short of impressive for the 23-year-old, who is playing his first season. He has taken charge of Rajasthan’s bowling lineup with remarkable skill. During the league stage of SMAT, Ashok claimed 19 wickets across seven matches, finishing as the top wicket-taker with two four-wicket hauls and two three-wicket hauls.

His standout performance of 4/16 against Uttarakhand showcased his knack for reading conditions and challenging batters. This incredible form has made Ashok one of the most sought-after uncapped fast bowlers as we head into the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi.

Ashok is yet to make his IPL debut

Meanwhile, Ashok hails from a modest farming family in Rampura, close to Jaipur. Back in 2021, he nearly gave up on cricket after struggling to move past the Rajasthan U-23 level. While he was busy preparing for a BA degree and eyeing a government job, he stumbled upon the Red Bull Speedster talent hunt, which turned his life around.

Even though registrations had closed, Ashok managed to persuade the organizers to let him bowl. Out of 250 participants, he kept advancing through the rounds, consistently hitting speeds of 136 to 140 kph, and eventually made it to the final five. His impressive performances caught the eye of former Indian fast bowler Pankaj Singh, along with scouts from the Rajasthan Royals, Dishant Yagnik and Zubin Bharucha.

After that, he spent some time as a net bowler for RR before landing a spot in the IPL. His first contract was with KKR, who signed him in 2022 for INR 55 lakh. Last year, RR brought him on board for INR 30 lakh. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to play a match with either team.

RCB holds trials with Ashok

Engaging in discussions with Pat Cummins at KKR really helped him pinpoint his greatest asset: bowling hard lengths at impressive speeds. Additionally, guidance from experienced players like Sandeep Sharma, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal has been instrumental in honing his strategies, making him a more well-rounded bowler.

During the current SMAT season, Ashok has been consistently clocking speeds between 140 and 145 kph, utilizing bounce and those hard lengths to break down some of the best domestic batting lineups.

His impressive skill set has significantly boosted his market value. Teams in need of Indian pace options have already brought him in for trials, including the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Interestingly, he has set his base price at INR 30 lakh for the upcoming mini-auction.
