Fugitive Indian diamond merchant Mehul Choksi has received a big shock. According to Belgian authorities, his appeal challenging his extradition to India has been rejected by the Belgian Supreme Court. Choksi is absconding in connection with the alleged Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank scam.

Supreme Court decision


The Court of Cassation, Belgium’s highest court, handed down its verdict on Tuesday. He also dismissed fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi’s appeal challenging his extradition to India, PTI reported. Court official Henry Vanderlinden shared information that the Court of Cassation has rejected the appeal and therefore, the Court of Appeal’s decision will stand. Mehul Choksi was arrested in Belgium in April and is still in Belgium. Efforts are on to bring him to India and finally the road is clear now.

This decision was challenged


Earlier, the Court of Appeal in Antwerp had approved India’s extradition request. He declared it unenforceable. On November 29, 2024, the pre-trial hearing order of the court was upheld. The arrest warrants of 2018 and 2021 of the Bombay Special Court were upheld. This paved the way for Choksi’s extradition to India.


Will Choksi remain in Arthur Road Jail?


Earlier, Indian institutions in Mumbai Arthur Road Photos and presentations of prison facilities were submitted to a Belgian court. India assured the Belgian court that Mehul Choksi would be kept under humane conditions. Choksi had said that he was at risk of political persecution and inhumane treatment in India. No one can stop Choksi from being brought to India now.
