Experts at WhatCar? have revealed the best family SUV with the affordable Kia Sportage at the top of the list. The motoring experts praised the Sportage for its "smart interior" and generous boot space, with the model edging out more expensive rivals.

The Sportage scored top marks on practicality with WhatCar? Also impressed with the model's overall driving experience. The result means the Sportage has beaten more sporty SUV rivals to the top of the list, such as the Range Rover, Mercedes GLC or BMW X3.

WhatCar? said: "Some people might think they're getting a superior car if they go for a premium-badged model rather than something more down to earth, but when a car is as well-rounded as the Sportage, it's really difficult to justify the extra outlay."

The Sportage is equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine capable of reaching 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 121mph. However, the expansive interior space is what the Sportage is well admired for, with the petrol model offering 591 litres when the seats are up.

Once the rear seats are folded down, boot space can be comprehensively expanded to as much as 1,780 litres, making it ideal for all the family. Inside, the model is also fitted with a range of impressive technology, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen.

Motorists can pick up the Sportage brand new for just over £26,000, but could get the keys to a model for just £272 per month under a finance deal. Almost new second-hand cars are a bit cheaper with vehicles available for just under £23,000.

An impressive warranty is also a bonus, with brand-new Kia models coming with a seven-year long manufacturer warranty, providing owners with extra confidence for the long term.

WhatCar? added: "As well as being good to drive and slightly comfier and more refined than the closely related Hyundai Tucson, the Sportage has a smart-looking and user-friendly interior, with loads of space for rear passengers and a large, practical boot.

"Although the rear seats don't slide like they do in some rivals, the seatbacks recline for extra comfort and have a useful 40/20/40 split."
