He said, ‘When the work was divided between men and women that men would work outside and women would take care of the house, then perhaps the nature of the woman might have been behind it. A woman is soft by nature and is a mother by birth. The responsibility of the house automatically falls to his/her share.

Recalling her married life, she said that she happily performed household responsibilities like cooking, preparing children for school and taking care of her in-laws. Seema said, ‘I never rebelled against it. I felt this was my duty and it gives me satisfaction. Before Manoj goes to the set, I cook food, but I do it not for him, but for myself, because I feel good.

‘I handle both work and home’

On the issue of the younger generation questioning gender roles, she said, ‘I talk to the youth like an elderly woman when they speak against household chores. What’s the problem with doing household chores? I myself am career-oriented and manage both work and home. If we consider household work as small, we will go against our nature.

Manoj Pahwa’s perspective

Manoj Pahwa also linked gender roles to historical and genetic behavior. He said, ‘This is genetic behavior. In ancient times, men used to go hunting and women used to take care of children. Only the man used to collect food. Women are trapped in modern society because this nature is present in them genetically, but they also want to be independent. Now they have to work both at home and outside.

Talking about the changing society, he said, ‘It takes thousands of years to change genetic behaviour. Now we are seeing some examples where men stay at home when women have good careers. Change will definitely come gradually.
