Organizing play into specific, thoughtfully designed zones allows children to engage with intent. They make independent decisions about how they want to learn and immerse themselves in activities that support creativity, social development, and physical growth. Teachers then connect these experiences to broader learning goals, helping children build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Classrooms at BIS Hanoi are divided into play zones, transforming everyday activities into meaningful learning experiences.
These zones allow children to focus, make independent choices, and engage in activities that support multiple areas of their development.
For educators, the structure provides opportunities to observe, extend learning, and guide children’s discoveries, making play both purposeful and rewarding.

The school’s Messy Zone allows children to experiment with paint, water, sand, and other materials. These activities support fine motor development, problem-solving skills, and creative thinking, turning every splash of paint or collage project into an opportunity for expression and exploration.
Home Zone encourages children to engage in imaginative play, acting out familiar routines, caring for dolls, or exploring toy kitchens. This form of play fosters language development, cooperation, empathy, and social skills, helping children make sense of the world around them.
Movement Zone channels children’s energy into climbing, balancing, dancing, and jumping activities that develop gross motor skills, coordination, and physical confidence. It also reinforces the enjoyment of movement and the benefits of active learning.
The Early Years program at BIS Hanoi includes classes for children aged from 2 to 5 years old, all following the U.K.’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, guided by the Development Matters Framework. This play-based approach combines purposeful activities with personalized experiences, giving every child a unique start to learning.
From the beginning, teachers support development across seven key areas. The three prime areas –Communication and Language, Physical Development, and Personal, Social, and Emotional Development –form the foundation for progress in four specific areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

BIS Hanoi also offers Early Years Taster Mornings for children aged 2–4. These sessions allow families to observe the play zones in action and see how structured, purposeful play nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
During the taster sessions, children engage in guided play activities while parents have the opportunity to explore the classrooms and outdoor spaces and learn more about the school’s approach to early childhood education.
