According to the government calendar, there are many occasions in 2026 when employees can take less leave, take a longer break or plan to travel. This year, due to holidays falling on Friday and Monday, there are a total of 9 long weekends.
According to the list released by the government, many major festivals and national holidays are falling on weekends in 2026. Some holidays are also falling on Friday or Monday, which will make the weekend longer. For example:
Republic Day is on Monday, 26 January. This means that you will get off on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Friday, April 3 is Good Friday. This means that you can get 3 days leave including weekends.
Buddha Purnima is on Friday, May 1. It’s also on Friday, meaning another long weekend.
Muharram is on Friday, 26th June. It is also falling on Friday, which will make the weekend longer.
Gandhi Jayanti is on Friday, October 2. It will be another long weekend in 2026.
Restricted holidays will also create long weekends
Restricted holidays like 1 January, Thursday, 23 January, Friday (Basant Panchami), 28 August, Friday (Raksha Bandhan) can also help in creating long weekends. Some of these holidays fall just before or after the weekend.
