Adrian Chiles has revealed he has been diagnosed with skin cancer. The TV presenter has had an operation to remove a suspicious patch of skin on his shoulder and a biopsy later revealed it was cancerous.

Adrian, 58, told how he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his latest column for the Guardian, but reassured readers that it is thankfully 'nothing serious'.

The presenter said he booked an appointment with a dermatologist after spotting a change to his shoulder. The patch was removed to check if it was cancerous and the former One Show host admitted he was fraught with worry while waiting for the results.

"I distinctly heard the word “carcinoma” in there somewhere," said Adrian. "He said I’d have to come back and have it taken out, and then they would see whether or not it was a carcinoma. Great. When? We’ll write to you, he said. I suggested that, if cancer was a possibility, then a bit of hurry-up might be called for. To which he said: “Oh, it won’t make any difference now. The only thing that would have made any difference was if you’d come sooner.” To me, this sentence argued against itself somewhat. Time was either of the essence, or it wasn’t. I even flirted with the idea of interpreting “won’t make any difference now” as his way of saying I was doomed anyway."

He was later told that he wouldn't get his results until December 18, by an app 'powered by Patients Know Best'.

Adrian wrote:"'By now I wanted to flush my phone down the toilet. This crap masquerades as communication, but communication is either two-way or it's nothing."

Thankfully there was better news later as after getting stressed with the NHS phoneline and app he has managed to make contact with someone who has assured him the situation is not life threatening.

Chiles wrote: "It was a squamous cell carcinoma. All removed and won’t spread. So not nothing, but not serious. Needs keeping an eye on. Whatever, I don’t care, because I now have this skin cancer nurse’s email. The human contact feels as good as any treatment or cure."

He added: "I can forgive shabby hospitals, confusion over appointments, even doctors’ poor bedside manner, but all the apps in the world can’t replace a real person."

Chiles presented Match of the Day 2 and co-presented the One Show until 2010 when he signed with ITV Sport and also fronted breakfast show Daybreak with Christine Lampard. However he left when ITV terminated his contract in 2015.

He also admitted that he struggled with a battle with booze and anxiety after being axed from the ITV breakfast show Daybreak in 2011 when the show failed to take off.

In an interview with The Guardian, the presenter said: “The ups and downs with my income have been stressful over the years, but I’ve always been quite careful with money." More recently he has worked back on the BBC on screen and on Radio Five Live.

Adrian has previously hosted BBC One’s satirical news quiz, Have I Got News for You. Early in his career he presented Working Lunch and The Money Programme, Panorama, various documentaries, and The Apprentice: Your Fired. He also appeared on a Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special in 2021.
