Schools shut in Chennai due to heavy rainfall

A holiday has been declared for schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur on Thursday as the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted another day of heavy rains in various parts of Tamil Nadu. The weather agency has predicted very heavy rainfall in north coastal Tamil Nadu region. The district administrations of Chennai and Tiruvallur have declared a holiday for schools alone in the respective districts as a precautionary measure.

Chennai and its neighbouring districts woke up to heavy rainfall on Thursday morning, triggering waterlogging in arterial stretches, residential pockets and low-lying neighbourhoods. The IMD has also warned of squally winds at 35–45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, over the Arabian Sea and off the Kerala coast. "Thunderstorms with lightning across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. An ocean currents alert along the Chennai coast—from Palavakkam to Lakshmipuram Odaikuppam—with currents expected at 1.4–1.5 m/sec until 7 pm. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea," the weather department said.

Unlike Chennai, other government offices and establishments continued to function normally. The Regional Meteorological Centre stated that rainfall is expected to gradually decrease over the next 24 hours as the system weakens further. However, pockets of the Chengalpattu district continued to witness heavy spells. Localities under the Chengalpattu and Kattankulathur unions -- including Kolathur, Balur and Appur -- saw sharp showers accompanied by thunder and lightning.
