In winter, hair becomes dry, rough, and lifeless. Dandruff also increases due to low moisture. Oiling is one of the simplest ways to nourish the scalp, improve hair growth, and maintain shine. But many women unknowingly make mistakes while applying oil. These mistakes not only reduce the benefits of oiling but can also weaken the hair.

If you oil your hair regularly but still don’t see any improvement, you might be making one of these common errors.

1. Applying too much oil

Many women apply excessive oil thinking it will give extra nourishment.
But this causes the opposite effect.

What happens:
• The scalp becomes overly greasy
• Pores get clogged
• Roots become weak
• Hair growth slows down
• Extra shampooing is needed, which dries hair further

A small amount of oil is enough to coat the scalp and hair.

2. Not massaging the scalp

Applying oil without a gentle massage is another common mistake.

Why massage is essential:
• It stimulates blood circulation
• Helps oil reach the roots
• Improves nutrient absorption
• Strengthens follicles

Spend at least 5–10 minutes massaging the scalp in circular motions.

3. Keeping oil on the hair for too long

Experts suggest washing hair within 45 minutes to 2 hours of oiling.

What happens when you leave it overnight:
• Dust and dirt stick to the scalp
• Pores get blocked
• Increases dandruff and itching
• Raises the risk of fungal infections

Long hours don’t increase benefits — they increase scalp problems.

4. Using the wrong oil for your hair type

Every hair type needs a different kind of oil. Using the wrong one reduces effectiveness.

Right oil according to hair type:
Dry hair: Coconut oil, almond oil, sesame oil
Oily scalp: Jojoba oil, lightweight coconut oil
Damaged/chemically treated hair: Argan oil, olive oil

Choosing the right oil is as important as applying it correctly.
