In the winter season, problems like cold, sore throat and blocked nose become common. Due to drop in temperature and cold winds, the immune system starts weakening, due to which viral infections take hold rapidly. In such a situation, along with medicines, home remedies also play an important role in providing immediate relief. In Ayurveda, especially the decoction made from basil, ginger and black pepper is considered an effective treatment for cold and cough. Experts say that this natural mixture proves to be very effective in reducing nasal congestion, throat swelling and the effects of cold in the body.

Tulsi is considered a sacred plant in the Indian medical system. The antiviral and antibacterial properties present in it play an important role in fighting cold and cough. Tulsi increases the immunity of the body and helps in keeping the respiratory system clean. Ginger, on the other hand, naturally warms the body and is considered effective in reducing throat swelling and mucus. Consumption of ginger also improves blood circulation, which reduces the effects of cold in the body.

Black pepper has been used in respiratory diseases since ancient times. It is helpful in thinning the mucus and removing congestion inside the nose. An element called piperine present in it activates the immune system and increases the ability to fight infection. When a decoction is prepared by mixing basil, ginger and black pepper, it becomes a natural and powerful medicine for cold and cough.

The method of making the decoction is also very simple. Take two glasses of water in a vessel and add 10–12 basil leaves, one inch grated ginger and half teaspoon black pepper. Boil the mixture on high flame and then cook on low flame until the water reduces to almost half. Filter the prepared decoction and drink it lukewarm. For better results, a small amount of honey can be added to it, but keep in mind that the decoction should not be too hot, otherwise the properties of honey may get destroyed.

Experts say that taking this decoction twice a day can provide immediate relief from the problems of blocked nose, salty throat and heaviness in the head. Additionally, it also reduces the chances of further infection by increasing the body’s immunity. This kadha is generally considered safe as it is prepared from natural ingredients, but pregnant women, children or persons on any special medication should consult a doctor before consuming it.
