England, UK and Great Britain, these are the words which we often hear or use. But do they all mean the same thing, or is there a difference? Many people do not know this. Many people think that these are all names of the same place. But, every word has its own special meaning. To remove this confusion, it is important to understand the difference between them.

England is a country. Just as other countries have their own history and boundaries, so does England. At the same time, Great Britain is an island which includes England, Scotland and Wales. That is, this area made up of three countries is called Great Britain. Therefore, Great Britain is a geographical name. But, the United Kingdom (UK) represents an internationally recognized sovereign country.

When Northern Ireland is joined with England, Scotland and Wales, we call it the UK. Its full name is 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. To put it simply, England is a country. The island of England, Scotland and Wales is called Great Britain. And when Northern Ireland joins Great Britain, that entire sovereign nation is called the United Kingdom.
