The Central Government has taken an important step to curb the increasing cases of mobile theft in the country. Under the new system, if a person’s phone is stolen, then no one else will be able to use it nor will he be able to use it by inserting a new SIM in it. This system is being considered as a big initiative of the government towards strengthening mobile security and reducing the incidents of theft.

In this new system implemented by the Telecom Ministry, the IMEI number of the smartphone will be recorded in a centralized database across the country. As soon as a phone is reported stolen or lost, the system will immediately blacklist that particular IMEI. After being blacklisted, the phone will not be able to activate on any mobile network, no matter what SIM card is tried to be inserted in it. This will render the stolen phone useless and will be of no value to criminals.

According to officials, this initiative aims to reduce incidents of theft and further strengthen the digital security of citizens. Such cases have come to light in many states, where stolen phones were fraudulently reset or sold in other states with fake identification. But this will not be possible after the implementation of new technology. The central database will be active across the country and blacklisted phones will be automatically deactivated on every network.

The government has also provided a portal and helpline facility called CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) for this. If someone’s phone is stolen, he can upload the IMEI information of his phone on the CEIR portal after filing the FIR. The phone will be blocked within a few minutes. Once the phone is recovered, the user can unblock it again through the same portal. This entire process has been designed in a simple and digital manner.

Experts believe that this decision is the biggest attack on the chain of mobile theft. Earlier, the IMEI of the stolen phone was changed and it was resold in the market, which made it difficult to track. But now the monitoring of IMEI numbers has been made stronger than before. Apart from this, telecom companies have also been directed not to allow reactivation of blacklisted IMEI under any circumstances.

This system is expected to provide a lot of relief to common citizens. Now they will be confident that if stolen, their data and personal information will not fall into the wrong hands. At the same time, it will be almost impossible for criminals to steal the phone and use or sell it.

The government says that in future this service will be made more modern, so that cyber networks to theft can be completely curbed.
