In a recent weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR for one of the harshest early-winter phases. The continuous fall in temperatures along with dense morning fog and decreasing air quality day-by-day has left an impact on both residents and travellers.
Sharp dip in temperatures
As per IMD’s latest forecast, minimum temperatures across Delhi-NCR are set to see a severe drop over the next few days. The night temperature is expected to touch 5–8°C, while daytime temperature will remain between 22–25°C. Recent data shows an unusually steep decline — some Delhi stations recorded minimum temperatures near 5.7°C, which is among the lowest early-December temperatures in over 10 years.
The cold wave is being driven by clear skies and northwesterly winds. It is a classic winter pattern. And this is going to intensify at night across the plains. IMD has also warned that the chill will be accompanied by dense to moderate fog during early morning hours.
Fog/low visibility likely to disrupt travel
In the coming days, fog is expected to settle across the region from late night to early morning. The condition will reduce visibility on major corridors including NH-44, Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, and Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
What travellers should expect and be prepared for:
Flight delays or rescheduling at Delhi Airport
Railway operations on northern zones
Traffic congestion in the morning hours
IMD’s advisory also urges people to avoid early-morning long-distance travel. Delhi-NCR’s air quality has also worsened due to low wind speeds and temperature inversion.
Recent AQI readings across the region:
Delhi: Around 300+ (Very Poor to Severe)
Noida: 290–320
Ghaziabad: 300+
Greater Noida: 310–330
As per air-quality monitoring agencies, pollution levels may fluctuate but are likely to remain in the “Very Poor” to “Severe” category for the next few days. Health officials advise limiting strenuous outdoor activity and wearing N95 masks when outside.
Delhi winters
Delhi winters are quite famous. It is considered a peak tourism season in the capital city; however, given the current weather and AQI conditions, it demands preparation. Sightseeing is possible with smart scheduling and time monitoring. Late morning and afternoon hours are the safest windows for outdoor explorations.
Travellers are suggested to come prepared with winter stuff and be updated with IMD advisories.
