Chennai: A Chennai Metro train operating on the Green Line between Chennai Central and High Court metro stations suddenly halted mid-tunnel on Monday due to a technical malfunction, leaving passengers trapped inside for approximately 20 minutes before services were safely restored.
The incident occurred during the afternoon commute, causing significant distress among passengers as the train came to an unexpected stop in the underground section. According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials, the halt was caused by a technical glitch in the train’s operational system.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers. Our technical team immediately addressed the issue, and the train resumed its journey safely within 20 minutes,” a CMRL spokesperson said. “Passenger safety was never compromised, and all protocols were followed.”
The disruption, though brief, led to minor delays on the line as the affected train was cleared. Services were normalized shortly after the train was moved to the nearest station. CMRL has initiated an internal inspection to determine the exact cause of the malfunction and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Passengers have been advised to stay updated through CMRL’s official channels for real-time service alerts.
