Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation has decided to take strict action in property tax collection. The corporation has identified 146 big defaulters who have tax outstanding of more than Rs 10 lakh. When payment was not made despite earlier sending notices and warnings, the corporation decided to initiate personal hearing and sealing process.
According to corporation officials, all big defaulters will be called personally. They will be asked why they have not been paying taxes for years. If a businessman or property owner cites serious financial reasons, it will be investigated. But if the explanation is not satisfactory, the corporation will take action to seal their establishments.
A total of 216,224 properties are registered in Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation area. Many of these people pay taxes on time. But 146 property owners who have outstanding of more than Rs 10 lakh are challenging the recovery campaign. Experts believe that such huge dues affect the financial condition of the city.
Officials say that this time the recovery operation has been kept strict. The teams have been instructed to clearly tell the defaulters during the hearing that if payment is not made, there will be no option to avoid sealing.
Senior advocate Waryam Singh says that strict action is necessary against big defaulters. He believes that when common citizens pay taxes as per their capacity, then big institutions should also fulfill their responsibilities.
Regional Taxation Officer Ajay Walia said that all the big defaulters will be heard personally. If no concrete reason is found, the last resort would be to seal their property.
