Dr. Subhash Chandra, born on November 30, 1950 in Hisar, Haryana, exemplifies the transformative power of forward thinking and dedication. Starting from a humble grain trading family, Chandra built a massive business empire that revolutionized Indian media and entertainment.
His business journey began in the early 1980s when he secured a contract with the Food Corporation of India for grain storage. Abandoning the old methods, Chandra introduced a new method: storing grains in open spaces under specially designed laminated plastic sheets. To implement this, he imported machinery from Switzerland, trained engineers from abroad, and built production facilities. This venture not only met the operational needs but also laid the foundation for Essel Propack, which became the global leader in laminated tube packaging.
Inspired by his visit to Disneyland, Chandra ventured into the fledgling leisure sector by building India’s first amusement park, Essel World, on a large land in Mumbai in 1989. Although it faced commercial challenges, the initiative deepened his connection with the entertainment industry.
The turning point of Chandra’s career came in 1992 with the launch of Zee TV, India’s first private satellite television channel. At a time when state-owned Doordarshan was completely dominant, Zee TV disrupted the broadcasting environment by delivering a variety of content such as Bollywood films, television serials, news and cultural programs directly to millions of homes. This major step broke the government’s monopoly, thereby promoting the growth of private television and creating huge employment opportunities in content creation and broadcasting.
Through Accel Group, Chandra expanded into multiple sectors, creating diverse conglomerates such as packaging, infrastructure, education and digital media. His innovations transformed India’s media ecosystem, proving that local companies could compete at the global level.
Chandra’s success comes from her strong determination and her strong focus on communication rather than language barriers. Despite initial difficulty with English, Mumbai’s main business language, he persevered and prioritized purity of intention over perfection of language. This determination and willingness to take calculated risks helped him face challenges and create a lasting legacy.
Today, Dr. Subhash Chandra is a symbol of the victory of entrepreneurship. By starting private television and driving industry-wide innovation, he not only changed the way India watched entertainment, but also showed that a big vision and persistent work could transform ordinary people into formidable business empires, inspiring generations of entrepreneurs to come.
